Delvin was a male mouse and a member of the Mouse Guard. His name means "Proud". David Petersen based him on his friend Nate Pride.[1]

Biography[]

Early life[]

Delvin lived with his parents at the edge of Flintrust in a house which operated as a tavern. His father cooked and his mother provided service. By Spring 1127, Delvin's father was gravely ill and either Delvin or his mother had to stay at the sick mouse's side at all times. Their neighbor Margot kindly agreed to take over as the tavern's cook, although her cooking could not meet the quality of Delvin's father. Delvin's mother told her son the Tale of Owlhen Caregiver. Both family mice made the decision to offer the dying mouse what comfort they could till his last breath.

Service with the Mouse Guard[]

Delvin's mentor and trainer in the Mouse Guard was Fabron. He became a good friend to Rand and a fellow shield-bearer. He wielded a round shield and a falchion to balance attacking and defense in combat. Delvin's generosity was well-known throughout the mice of any patrol he had ever served in, and he often put the needs of any other mouse in his party above his own.[2]

The winter of 1152 saw shortages of food and medicine at Lockhaven. Gwendolyn sent patrols of Guardmice to various settlements to secure the necessary supplies. Delvin, Aubrey and Bastian joined a patrol led by Sienna which journeyed to the settlements of Elmwood, Whitepine, Dawnrock, Thistledown and Wildseed. Later that season, Delvin attended Celanawe's funeral ceremony.[3]

During the spring of 1153, Gwendolyn sent Delvin and Bastian to hunt down a snapping turtle near the settlement of Grasslake. Delvin slashed the turtle with his falchion and jammed its mouth open with his shield, while Bastian peppered the reptile with arrows.[4]
