Grain peddler was the title given to an anonymous male mouse that peddled grain on the route from Rootwallow to Barkstone.[1] He is an ash grey and wears a red cloak and straw hat.
During the fall of 1152, the grain peddler met with the traitorous Guardmouse Midnight in Conrad's house. Midnight handed the peddler an illegal map of Lockhaven to transport to the Axe Army's headquarters in Barkstone. On his journey, however, the peddler was attacked by a snake and devoured, preventing the map's arrival to its destination. After Lieam killed the snake, Saxon cut open its corpse and Kenzie retrieved the peddler's body. The three mice gave the dead mouse a simple burial. On the night of the Axe Army's march to Lockhaven, Lieam passed the Merchant's grave marker.
Although there is no clear motive for the peddler's collaboration with the Axe Army, he expresses a lack of faith in the Mouse Guard by their unavailability for hard-working mice like himself.
